Psalms 42

Why Are You Cast Down, O My Soul?

To the choirmaster. A Maskil
Probably a musical or liturgical term
of b the Sons of Korah.

c As a deer pants for flowing streams,
so pants my soul for you, O God.
d My soul thirsts for God,
for e the living God.
When shall I come and f appear before God?
Revocalization yields  and see the face of God

h My tears have been my food
day and night,
i while they say to me all the day long,
“Where is your God?”
These things I remember,
as I j pour out my soul:
k how I would go l with the throng
and lead them in procession to the house of God
with glad shouts and songs of praise,
m a multitude keeping festival.
n Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you o in turmoil within me?
p Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation
Hebrew the salvation of my face; also verse 11 and 43:5
and my God.
My soul is cast down within me;
therefore I r remember you
s from the land of Jordan and of t Hermon,
from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep
at the roar of your waterfalls;
u all your breakers and your v waves
have gone over me.
By day the  Lord w commands his steadfast love,
and at x night his song is with me,
a prayer to the God of my life.
I say to God y my rock:
Why have you forgotten me?
z Why do I go mourning
because of the oppression of the enemy?”
10 As with a deadly wound in my bones,
my adversaries taunt me,
aa while they say to me all the day long,
Where is your God?”
11  ab Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.
